Prof. Dr. Michael Becker-Mrotzek is Full Professor of German Language and Didactics at the University of Cologne. His research interests fall into the broad area of language in the context of education, in particular in the fields of language intervention and the teaching of writing and conversational skills. Since 2012, he has been the Director of the Mercator-Institute for Literacy and Language Education. In addition, Prof. Dr. Becker-Mrotzek became spokesman of the joint governmental and federal initiative Education through Language and Literacy (BiSS) in 2013. He is also responsible for the development of items for the subject German for VERA 8 (German National Assessment of Educational Progress). Within the framework of a nationwide initiative to improve teacher education entitled Teacher Education – Shaping Heterogeneity and Inclusion, he is in charge of the early-career academic development program. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Becker-Mrotzek is spokesman of the Graduate School for Teacher Education at the University of Cologne and he is also a member of the advisory board of the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA), as well as the School of Education at the University of Salzburg.
